Migraines

Migraines affect 28 million people in the US alone. Around 18% of women and 6% of men have experienced migraines. Symptoms vary but can include severe headache, nausea, vomiting, hypersensitivity to light and sound, chills, sweating, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, numbness or tingling, and difficulty speaking and concentrating.

While the exact causes of migraines are unknown, attacks begin with chemical changes in the brain and nervous system, progressing into painful restrictions in blood flow. Migraines may also be triggered by various tastes, odors, lights, noises, or physical or emotional stress.

HBOT seems to be more effective with patients whose migraines have a vascular origin, either an imbalance of chemicals or abnormal blood flow to a particular area of the brain. HBOT has also shown benefits for migraine patients who experience side effects or contraindications to standard drug therapy.

Benefits of HBOT for migraines include

  • Stops migraines in 80% of patients within 40 minutes of treatment

  • Regulates blood flow to the brain during migraine episodes

  • Modulates serotonin and substance P levels, which can induce migraines

  • Reduces the number of headaches when used prophylactically
